Barbados Island
Located
southeast of the Virgin
Islands, Barbados
Island is the farthest east of all the Caribbean Islands and is one of the
richest and most upscale of the British Crown. Barbados is an upscale
island but still retains much of the Creole influence with it’s
steel-drum music and food, intermingled with high tea and cricket
games.
Barbados
is an extremely popular Caribbean Island with 70 square miles
sugar-sand beaches. However, Barbados does have different regions of
oceanfront. The east and north coats are along the Atlantic Ocean
and the water is rougher than you’ll find on the south and west
Caribbean side. Barbados is a great place to shop as well. You can
find many department stores and malls downtown as well as gift shops
along the way. For those of you who enjoy nightlife, St. Lawrence
Gap is where you’ll find many nightclubs and restaurants.
The
Spanish and Portuguese originally occupied Barbados, but it was the
British who ultimately claimed it in 1625. British and West African
slaves have influenced this island and is seen evident in everything
from their music to their architecture.
Until
tourism became popular, the island's economy rested largely on
sugarcane crops, which were introduced by the Dutch. It was this
widespread planting of sugarcane and the plantations that
precipitated the importation of thousands of West African slaves
into Barbados. Gaining full independence in 1838, these slaves began
important positions in the island life and contributed to many of
the arts and crafts.
A
vacation on Barbados island will find you pausing to
appreciate the museums, historical churches, plantation homes, and
hidden caves, for a look into its past. If you’re planning on
water sports or swimming while in Barbados, it’s best to stay on
the western and southern coasts. The waves of the warm waters here
are generally calm. On the north and east coast you’ll delight in
picturesque landscapes, with pristine white sand, this is where
you’ll find a few caves. Surfers will benefit from the waves from
the Atlantic along the northeastern coast.
Barbados
is a relatively flat island, rising gently to the central highland
region, the highest point being Mount Hillaby, in the Scotland
District, at 340 meters (1,100 ft) above sea level. The island
is located in the Atlantic Ocean, to the east of the other Caribbean
islands. Barbados Island is geologically composed of coral (90 m/300 ft
thick). The land falls in a series of "terraces" in the
west and inclines in the east. Most of Barbados is circled by coral
reefs and beautiful blue waters, excellent for scuba diving,
snorkeling, fishing, and many other vacation water sports.
Barbados
Weather: The climate is moderate tropical with two seasons, wet and
dry. The dry season (December to May) and wet season (June to
November) gives an annual rainfall of 40-90 inches (1,000–2,300 mm).
Barbados is often spared the worst effects of the region's tropical
storms and hurricanes during the rainy season as its far eastern
location in the Atlantic Ocean puts it just outside the principal
hurricane strike zone. A hurricane hits about once every 26 years.
The average daily temperature stays between 75 and 85 degrees
throughout the year.
Barbados Vacation
Rentals vs. Barbados Hotels
When
planning your vacation to Barbados, there are many Barbados hotels
to choose from; however, more and more travelers prefer to stay in a
privately owned vacation rental home or condo for both comfort and
cost-efficiency. A private vacation rental provides comforts not
offered by most Barbados hotels, such as a fully stocked kitchen for
home cooking, multiple bedrooms, and many homes even have their own
private swimming pool and Jacuzzi, which is tough to put a price on.
So, before considering Barbados hotels, shop around for the perfect Barbados
vacation rental that can accommodate your entire family with
both comfort and savings. You just might find the ideal beachfront
Barbados vacation rental your entire family will enjoy.
